The Hooch science bowl team placed in 5th place in the National Science Bowl at Washington, D.C. this weekend. This was just the second year of the science bowl team, and their second year that they won an all-paid trip to compete at nationals. This year, they made playoffs for the first time and beat teams such as Oak Ridge (from TN) and 2016 National Champion Montgomery Blair High School (from MD). They were knocked out of the playoffs by losses to Lexington High School (which went on to be 2017 National Champions) and Mira Loma High School (which finished in 4th place). Great job to the team and we are looking forward to great things in the future!
The team was composed of Ashwin Ramaswami (12th), Arvind Ramaswami (12th), Abhinav Kumar (12th), Kalen Patton (12th), and Maanas Purushothapu (10th).

Last weekend was another successful weekend for the Hooch quiz bowl team. Over the weekend, they competed at three competitions including the Marist Winter Invitational, the state history bowl and economics bowl.
At the Marist Winter Invitational, which Chattahoochee attended shorthanded because some players were at the history bowl on the same day, the B team won second place and the A team won sixth place. Congrats to Andy Luo for being the top individual scorer and Ashwin Ramaswami for being the second individual scorer.
At the state history bowl, Chattahoochee went 5/0 to win first place. Congrats to Tej Guttikonda for winning 1st place in the varsity division, Kevin Huang for winning 3rd place in the varsity division, Soham Kulkarni for winning 4th place in the varsity division, Foster Michaelis for winning 1st place in the jv division and Mihir Paramesh for winning 2nd place in the jv division.
Finally, at the state economics bowl, Chattahoochee easily took first place.
A great start to March. Last weekend, our Junior Varsity team competed at the state championships at Mary Parsons High School. They went fourth place in the whole state. There were some very impressive rounds and some very close games that came down to the tiebreaker. The sophomores and freshmen were very promising and have lots of potential. We look forward to great things in the coming years for all of them!
Congrats to: Mihir Paramesh (Captain), Nithilan Vincent, Maanas Purushothapu, Sahil Sudhir, Roy Kim, and Jaehun Seo

This weekend, on Saturday February 4, 2017, the Hooch quizbowl B team competed in Centennial's ATTACK invitational tournaments. Although they only had three people on their team, they performed very well against teams of 4 and 5. Congratulations to Kevin Huang, Soham Kulkarni, and Niranjan Ramasekaran for holding their ground and winning 2nd place. They lost to Dorman A from South Carolina in the finals, but their wins against teams such as Northview A and Collins Hill A showed that they are indeed among the top in the state. Stats can be found here: www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/4139/stats/combined/
Additionally, on Tuesday, the A team won the Fulton County Championship. The win is significant in that it secures Chattahoochee a spot on TV to compete on HighQ's 2017-2018 season. For those of you unfamiliar with High Q, it is a long-running local TV quiz game show featuring competition between high school teams. Please congratulate Tej Guttikonda (Captain), Ashwin Ramaswami, Aditi Choudhury, Abhinav Kumar, and Kevin Huang.
A great start to February!
It was a big day for the Hooch Quiz Bowl program. On Saturday, 1/28, we split up to go to two different tournaments. We sent 4 teams to compete at GATA Winter at Apalachee High School and our off-shoot Science Bowl sent two teams to compete at Science Bowl Subregionals at Piedmont College. In all, 27 Hooch Quiz Bowlers competed on Saturday.
For the second year in a row, the A team went undefeated at Science Bowl Subregionals, winning the finals over Northview. They now move on to Savannah to attempt to qualify for Nationals for the second year in a row. A win in Savannah would win them another all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. Congrats to the Science Bowl A-Team for their 1st place finish: Ashwin Ramaswami (captain), Arvind Ramaswami, Kalen Patton, and Abhinav Kumar. Also congrats to the B-Team: Sahil Sudhir (captain), Ellie Wong, Sarah Chen, and Maanas Purushothapu. They got some great experience, and finished 4th; not bad for their first year.
Miles away, at GATA north, all 4 Hooch teams qualified for playoffs after lunch. Due to the loss of personnel to the Science Bowl tournament, the teams at GATA were a little different than normal, creating some interesting match-ups. Our A-Team was composed of Tej Guttikonda (Captain) and Aditi Choudhury from the regular A-Team, and Kevin Huang and Niranjan Ramasekaran from our regular B-Team. Junior Soham Kulkarni and sophomores Harrison Zhu, Andy Luo, and Mihir Paramesh filled in to complete our improvised B-team. The C-Team was made up of Nithilan Vincent (Captain), Srija Sengupta, Charline Truong , Rohan Vuppala, and our new team member Foster Michaelis. Our D-Team (JV) was made up of all freshmen: Roy Li (Captain), Nick Nguyen, Jaehun Seo, Brian Amaro, Suraj Peramanu, and Rajat Sethi.
Not only did the B-Team go undefeated in prelims, but they were able to pull a huge upset in the second round of playoffs by beating the Hooch A-Team. What an amazing performance! The B team ended up finishing 2nd and the A team finished 3rd. It was a great experience for all teams.
Stats from the GATA tournament are available here:
This weekend on 12/17 the Hooch Quizbowl Team traveled to New Trier high school in Chicago, IL for their invitational tournament. They played several top-ranked teams in the Uber-Competitive division. They played on a collegiate-level set.
Hooch A lost only two games in the tournament, beating the top-ranked team in prelims, finishing in 3rd place overall. Hooch B beat the defending national champions and Hooch A in an upset game, finishing 5th overall. The B team showed great potential! Individual awards were also earned by Ashwin Ramaswami from Hooch A (5th top scorer) and Kevin Huang from Hooch B (6th top scorer).
